Remote recording is a tracking session done over an internet connection, using specialized software. There are many different programs, but the general concept is the same. The studio engineer will host a session, and the Artist will join. Both will use an audio interface to communicate, and the artist will use it to send any instrument or vocalization to the engineer who records it directly to a Digital Audio Workstation, aka a "DAW" however recording directly over an internet connection during peak hours of the day, can result in a number of problems with the audio quality. Fortunately, most of which can easily be repaired or replaced.
Professional versions of these programs make a backup file that preserves a copy of the audio on the hard drive of the Artists computer. This file is then recovered, and utilized by the Host Computer. This copy of the master audio is then either used to repair segments of the recording, or this "backup" can be used in it's entirety.
Some setups are better than other's, and the quality of the gear used can effect the overall sound. It's recommended that you use the highest quality equipment available to you.
It's important to know how to set up your interface with the equipment you want to record. Microphone setup is essential if recording vocals. In general, all you need is, an Interface, Computer, Internet Connection, Headphones, Microphone, and Software Compatible with that used by the host. In this case, VST Connect Pro is the studio software, and Artists will need to Download VST Connect Performer, Free from Steinberg.net.
Cubase 11 Pro is the standard for this studio. Providing a smooth workflow, powerful stock plugins and the ability to integrate as needed. The Overall Flexibility gives Cubase 11 Pro the most complete feel when compared to other DAW's we've used before.
VST Connect Pro is our first choice in Collaboration Software, and preferred for Remote Recording. Not only does it integrate flawlessly into Cubase, we've found it delivers the most authentic studio feel to the client.
In Fact, The Artist can practically disregard how knowledgeable they are (or aren't) with adjusting audio levels and other complicated settings during the session.
After the initial hardware setup, The Engineer takes complete control of the session and software, making adjustments as needed. The Client downloads VST Connect Performer, which is completely free and requires no license or DAW as it's a stand alone program. Once connected to session, the engineer has control of both sides making all necessary adjustments. This is the "Real Feel" that allows the Artist to relax, and focus completely on their performance.
